As summer winds down, we begin to think about the fall and the change of seasons coming. Days get shorter, schedules get busier and finding time for ourselves and our recovery may get a little more challenging. But as John Maxwell wrote, “Change is inevitable, growth is optional.” In new recovery, change can feel daunting and the comfort of your routine may have you feeling a bit anxious about moving forward in new directions. This is where the “back to basics” mantra comes into play. Make sure your recovery is still the number one priority, for without it, attitudes and behaviors can easily fall back into addictive patterns.
Whether you are newly in recovery or not, we all need to pace ourselves. Take the time to remember each sentence of the Serenity Prayer and ask:
God grant me the Serenity to Accept the things I cannot change [my addiction],
the Courage to change the things I can [my recovery],
and the Wisdom to know the difference [through accountability with others].
The future awaits us all. Rather than encountering its changes with fear and trepidation, the tools of recovery can rebuild our optimistic spirit. Let’s look forward with a healthy sense of excitement and anticipation!
