“Sometimes we should express our gratitude for the small and simple things like the scent of the rain, the taste of your favorite food, or the sound of a loved one’s voice.” – Joseph B. Wirthlin

Before we get sober, our lives are full of misery and despair. Our perception is so skewed that we have no appreciation for or awareness of the gifts that we have in our lives. Recovery changes our outlook, and gradually we begin to take notice of even the smallest of pleasures. When we are no longer blurring our our consciousness with chemical substances, we become able to see the beauty that is all around us. Things that we have taken for granted become highlighted in technicolor, and we can appreciate all of the joy in life, from the biggest to the smallest.

Today, I will take moments to appreciate the small gifts and joys throughout my day, and will thank my higher power for this new awareness.
