The electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) is a battery powered device that is designed to mimic cigarettes through its unique electronic nicotine delivery system. In 2009, the unique smoking alternative began to be hugely popular, and has only increased since then. At that time, seemingly everyone had to have one as it was more about the image and less about the health benefits. Recently, reasons for using e-cigarettes have reciprocated as more and more nicotine addicts have used e cigarettes solely for health reasons.

The Benefits

Many regulatory agencies including the FDA aren’t sold on the health benefits that manufacturers claim about their products. Nonetheless there are a few worthy advantages to take note of. At the very least, e-cigarettes are vapor which no matter how you look at it, isn’t tar filled (tobacco) smoke.

  • No secondhand smoke.

The Cons

According to the FDA, e-Cigarettes “may contain ingredients that are known to be toxic to humans”, and “because clinical studies about the safety and efficacy of these products for their intended use have not been submitted to FDA, consumers currently have no way of knowing 1) whether e-cigarettes are safe for their intended use, or 2) about what types or concentrations of potentially harmful chemicals or what dose of nicotine they are inhaling when they use these products.” The FDA is also concerned about the appeal to the younger generation, and whether the marketing for these products may encourage younger children to use them, and thus add to nicotine dependence statistics.

Are e-cigarettes the Solution?

E-cigarettes might not be the solution, but they are certainly a respectable alternative. The answer comes down to whatever method you believe works for you. As long as you do whatever it takes to be achieve abstinence, then you’ve already succeeded.
