How does an alcoholic refuse a drink? It’s not as simple as “just saying no,” as any alcoholic already knows. Conquering alcohol takes a comprehensive plan to achieve long term success.
Alcohol Relapse Prevention Plan:
- Learn your triggers. Remember that you are not your past, you have moved on. However some things from your past may remain. Friends, places where you’ve drank, even the music you listened to might make you feel the urge to drink. Learn what triggers you and do your best to avoid them at all costs.
- Examine your social circle. Friends and family can be very supportive during the recovery process. However, if they try to convince you to drink, or make light of your goals in recovery, you may need to reevaluate those relationships.
- Attend AA meetings. Getting involved in AA (finding a sponsor, working the steps, getting a home group, and making new friends) is usually essential to long-term sobriety.
- Find new hobbies. Find something that you enjoy doing to replace the time you used to spend drinking. Too much free time can lead to picking up old behaviors, so take the time to develop new interests and activities.
